Brazil has blocked WhatsApp for 72 hours (3 days)

Brazil has blocked WhatsApp for 72 hours (3 days) over a dispute to access encrypted data. Judge Marcel Montalvão from Sergipe, Brazil has ordered the nation’s telecom providers to block the messaging app as WhatsApp  wouldn’t provide records to the court. WhatsApp said they were unable to hand over records in a drug investigation as they were encrypted. Telecom companies too would face a fine if they failed to comply with the ban. Jan Koum, WhatsApp CEO said that they don’t have what the judge is requesting, and will not change its position on encryption. He said, “Not only do we encrypt messages end-to-end on WhatsApp to keep people’s information safe and secure, we also don’t keep your chat history on our servers. When you send an end-to-end encrypted message, no one else can read it – not even us.”
