Facebook Plots Secret Chat for Messenger

Facebook Plots Secret Chat for Messenger

Facebook apparently has been working on mobile pay and secret chat features for its Messenger app, according to a report published this week by The Information, based on clues found in extracted software code on Messenger for iPhone.
Facebook Plots Secret Chat for Messenger Commands embedded in the software hint at secret conversations, similar to what's found in WhatsApp, the voice and messaging service owned by Facebook, according to the report.
Other references reportedly found in the code include commands to pay in person and pay in Messenger when picking up an item.
"Since Facebook has long said it would continue to develop and support its own message app, it makes sense that it would adopt specific WhatsApp features into its own solutions," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

Mobile Piggyback

The mobile pay feature is credible as well, King told TechNewsWorld. However, it remains unclear whether Facebook would compete with Android Pay and Apple Pay directly, or if it would piggyback on one of those services.
"That would require a far lower initial investment and less risk than starting its own service, and eliminate the complexities of negotiating partnerships with banks and financial services," King said.
Facebook does not intend to get into the payments business directly, but would consider partnering with other companies, CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicated during a conference call with analysts earlier this year.
"On payments, the basic strategy that we have is to make it -- especially in a product like Messenger -- that, where the business interaction may be a bit more transactional, to take all the friction out of making the transactions that you need," he said.
"So we don't view ourselves as a payments business. That's not the type of company that we are. We'll partner with everyone who does payments," Zuckerberg added.
Other possible additions to Messenger include shopping and delivery features, and the ability to synchronize calendars so users can update to-do lists, share articles and update their status.

Digital Assist?

The rumored features have the potential to turn Messenger into a virtual digital assistant, according to Susan Schreiner, an analyst at C4 Trends.
"Potentially, it could learn our likes and dislikes, make suggestions about articles to read or e-books to purchase," she told TechNewsWorld. "The Messenger app already enables you to send money to friends, so the next logical step would be using the app for in-store purchases."
Facebook would have to overcome a couple of hurdles, said Paul Teich, principal analyst at Tirias Research.
"Facebook is an advertising distribution channel," he told TechNewsWorld. "Mobile pay will give them more insight into personal transactions. It will be a crowded market, but they have mind share and are on a huge number of smartphones in good buying demographics."
If the company really wants to turn the secret chat feature into a confidential experience like WhatApp's, it will have to be willing to give up certain information, Teich said.
"Secret chat would presumably keep no record at all of messages sent," he said. "That means metadata too -- otherwise throwing away the message payload, but keeping data such as time and length of messages, sender and receiver."Source:Technewsworld

FBI paid more than $1.35M to break into iPhone – report

FBI paid more than $1.35M to break into iPhone – report

FBI director, 600x500
FBI director James Comey hinted about the market rate for law enforcement to hack an iPhone.
The identity of who helped the FBI break into the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters may never be known, but Comey did divulge more about what it cost to get the task done.
Speaking at an Aspen Security Forum event in London, he said: “We were able to get into the phone because, in an odd way, all the controversy around the litigation stimulated a marketplace around the world . . . for people trying to figure out if they could they break into an Apple 5C running iOS9 — and those details matter because that’s the phone that the terrorists left behind,” reported the Financial Times (FT).
Quizzed about the cost for such work, Comey did not answer directly but commented: “A lot. More than I will make in the remainder of this job, which is seven years and four months, for sure. But it was, in my view, worth it . . . I think it was very, very important that we got into that device.”
The FT pointed out Comey’s annual salary is $183,800, suggesting the FBI paid at least $1.35 million to the hackers.
Comey still hopes to find common ground with tech firms such as Apple to avoid paying out cash to outside parties in the future to hack their encryption.
“I’m hoping we can get to a sensible solution that doesn’t involve hacking and that doesn’t involving spending loads of money,” he said. Source: Mobileworld

Samsung to start production of 2nd Gen 10nm chipsets this year

Samsung to start production of 2nd Gen 10nm chipsets this year

These will reportedly offer 10% better performance; a cheaper, 14nm manufacturing process may also be in works for budget chipsets.

Samsung to start production of 2nd Gen 10nm chipsets this year
Samsung is planning to start production of the second generation of 10nm chipsets this year. At an invite-only event held at the company’s office in San Jose, Samsung Semiconductor’s Senior Director, Kelvin Low, told Re/code recode that the company will have thinner, 10nm chip-making technology in production later this year. He added that the second generation of these chipsets will offer 10% better performance as compared to the first generation. In addition, the company also announced plans for a cheaper, 14nm manufacturing process.
Samsung has already purchased a semiconductor Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool, which would facilitate the start of manufacturing 10nm chipsets before its competitors. The production of second generation 10nm chipsets along with the cheaper 14nm manufacturing processes could help Samsung get an edge over Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). TSMC has signed a deal with Apple to become the sole manufacturer of the iPhone 7’s chipset, and is expected to begin full-scale production of next generation chipsets by June 2016. Earlier, both Samsung and TSMC manufactured chipsets for iPhones. Samsung's 14nm FinFet process is being used for its own Exynos chipsets like 7420, 7870, and 8890. Qualcomm’s present generation flagship processor, the Snapdragon 820, also uses the 14nm FinFet process. Source:digit.in

Volkswagen, Mitsubishi caught cheating on fuel economy tests

After Volkswagen, Mitsubishi caught cheating on fuel economy tests

The cheating was spotted by Nissan, its partner in a mini-car venture. Mitsubishi stocks have hit a record low.

After Volkswagen, Mitsubishi caught cheating on fuel economy test...
On Wednesday afternoon, the Japanese automaker, Mitsubishi admitted that it had illegally manipulated its fuel economy tests. In contrast to the Volkswagen scandal where the officials spotted the cheating, Mitsubishi’s bluffs were identified by Nissan and it had stated more advantageous fuel consumption rates than the actual rates.
Mitsubishi has overstated the fuel efficiency of 625,000 cars. The company had falsified the data, mainly the load weight of the cars during testing, which made them appear more efficient. It also said that it had rigged the running resistance figure, which is a combination of resistance caused by the tyres and air when the car is moving, above the testing body of Japan’s mandated value.
Nissan and Mitsubishi had partnered for the ‘kei minicars’ project and Mitsubishi is responsible for the manufacturing of cars in this collaboration venture. The bluff was spotted during Nissan’s in-house testing. Mitsubishi said that the falsified data tests affected four mini car models only in Japan, out of which it supplies two to Nissan. The models which are affected are Mitsubishi’s - eK Wagon and eK Space, and Nissan’s – Dayz and Dayz Roox. Mitsubishi had sold 157,000 units of its model and supplied 468,000 models to Nissan.
Mitsubishi has halted the sales and production of the cars. It has announced that it would ‘sincerely respond’ to the customers who bought the cars and discuss the compensation terms with Nissan. Japanese officials raided Mitsubishi’s offices on Thursday and Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshihide Suga said that the company’s actions were ‘extremely serious’. “This is a case of manipulation of test data which undermines consumers’ trust, and it should not have happened,” he said.
This scandal has wiped out 33% of the company’s stock price in two days. Even though the manipulated data it is not widespread or high-tech as the Volkswagen emission report farce, VW’s stock tanked 31% in the first two days of the news-break, less than Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi’s stock sits at a record low having shed $2.5 billion in market cap. Source:digit.in

Microsoft stops production of Xbox 360

Game Over: Microsoft stops production of Xbox 360

After a decade of sales, the production of Microsoft Xbox 360 has been stopped while sales of existing stock will continue.

Game Over: Microsoft stops production of Xbox 360
On Wednesday, Microsoft announced on Xbox.com that they were stopping the production of Xbox 360. The Xbox console once held a quarter of the North America and Europe’s Market share, higher even than Microsoft’s expectations.
Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox, reflected on the journey and the achievements of the Xbox console. “Franchises like Gears of War were born on the 360, and established blockbusters like Halo really came into their own during this console generation. Xbox 360 was also the foundation of the industry-leading technical innovation like Kinect, and the start of system updates and dashboard refreshes on fan feedback” he posted. “ Thanks to the Xbox 360, we evolved Xbox Live from the original Xbox into the thriving online game community it is today. And the console became a beloved gaming and entertainment hub with over 78 billion gaming hour played, nearly 486 billion Gamerscore on 27 billion achievements and over 25 billion hours spent in apps over its lifetime.”
The story of Xbox began when Bill Gates, co-Founder of Microsoft set-up plans to make a console in order to ‘prevent Sony from controlling computing outside the desktop’. The Xbox was an amazing feat of engineering, the entire console was designed from scratch and launched it worldwide in just 20 months. By the time Sony’s PS3 released across Japan, Microsoft was ready in shipping more than 10 million Xbox 360 units to retail. Started with the aim to match Sony’s Play Station in terms of sales, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 had much higher sales of 80 million units. But the Xbox 360’s journey was not entirely profitable since it lost more than $4 billion in four years.
Existing stock of Xbox 360 will continue to be sold and so will the accessories and games for the console. Deals, multiplayer gaming and social features will continue to be available on Xbox live. People who own Xbox One as well as the Xbox 360 can now play the 360’s games on their One without any additional cost. source:digit news

2017 iPhone May Be a Glass Act

2017 iPhone May Be a Glass Act

apple-2017-iphone-amoled-glass
Apple has been developing a glass casing for a new iPhone with an AMOLED display to be unveiled in 2017, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities, reportedly said this week in a note to investors.
That would mark a return to the design of the iPhone 4 and 4s, both of which had glass casings.
The use of the AMOLED screen will offset the heavier weight of a glass back for the device, Kuo reportedly said.
No more than 40 percent of iPhones will be made with aluminum bodies once the glass device is launched, he predicted.
Apple has lots of experience with using glass in the iPhone 4 line, Kuo pointed out, dismissing concerns about the glass casing being damaged when dropped.
The new iPhone will have curved panels on the front and rear and a 5.8-inch screen. The glass casing will provide a point of differentiation from the competition, Kuo reportedly said.

The Real Story

Kuo, who apparently has sources within Apple's supply chain, repeatedly has been correct with prognostications about Apple.
However, "the big story here is Apple's decision to build a phone around a new AMOLED display," commented Wayne Lam, a principal analyst at IHS. "The casing design is just a result of that decision."
AMOLED would let Apple "do something interesting with wraparound displays, and therefore, a glass material will give them flexibility in creating continuous curves on the back," he told TechNewsWorld.
People shouldn't put too much stock in the conjectures around the casing material because "it's going to be a 2017 phone [and] Apple still has over 12 months to lock in the industrial design with their choice of materials," Lam cautioned.
Apple "could go back to glass, but I'd imagine they'd do something different, like picking up sapphire glass for greater durability or add in wireless charging," he suggested. "Still, the starting point will be the new display. Everything else falls behind that in terms of design criteria. Glass is just one option they can play with."
In 2014, Apple was awarded a patent for an all-glass iOS device.
It could use transparent semiconductor technology to make the device see-through, speculated Mike Jude, program manager at Stratecast/Frost & Sullivan.

Been There, Done That

Apple isn't the only company to make a mobile phone with glass front and rear panels. Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S7 smartphone lines have glass front and back panels sandwiching a metal frame. Lenovo unveiled an all-glass smartphone, the S850, in 2014.
"An all-glass device was a great idea several years ago, when it would've been the only one," noted Ramon Llamas, a research manager at IDC. "But now, several vendors have gone that route, so that point of differentiation isn't exactly as strong as it would've been some years ago."
Also, "what can you do with an all-glass phone that you couldn't do before?" he told TechNewsWorld. "A backing is a backing is a backing."
It's possible that Apple might offer an all-glass phablet-sized device, as "the last time they did glass backing for the iPhone it was for regular-sized devices," Llamas said. "But most people are going to cover up the back with a case anyway."
The real magic "is still going to be in the front of the device," he added.

Fear of Falling

Despite Kuo's assertions, durability will be a concern with an all-glass case, Frost's Jude told TechNewsWorld.
"Regardless of how tough the glass technology is, it's never going to be as durable as a metal-framed device," he said. "If Apple uses this approach, it can expect a higher damage and replace rate."
That said, however, an all-glass iPhone "would have a very high fashion cachet," Jude said. "Apple enthusiasts would definitely like a glass phone. It might even attract non-Apple users." source:TechNewsWorld

Viber Goes the Encryption Route

Viber Goes the Encryption Route

Viber on Tuesday announced that it has begun rolling out end-to-end encryption across all devices for the 711 million users of its messaging app.
Viber Goes the Encryption Route Users have to download Viber version 6.0 or higher.
The app offers stronger security in every voice or video call, message, video and photo, in both group and one-on-one messages, the company said.
In addition, Viber launched Hidden Chats, a feature that lets users hide specific chats from the main screen so only they know those chats exist. Hidden Chats can be accessed only by using a four-digit PIN.

Automatic Protection

All users will be protected by encryption automatically once they download the latest Viber app. Those using Viber on an iPad, Android tablet or desktop will be prompted to reconnect it to their smartphone using a QR code.
A color-coded padlock icon on the right-hand side of the device's screen will indicate the level of security applied.
The icon will be gray during end-to-end encrypted conversations. Tapping on the icon will display a tooltip informing users that the messages being sent are encrypted.
Users can authenticate contacts manually by selecting them as trusted contacts. A green padlock icon indicates the selected contact's authentication key will be monitored for future changes, so users can be sure they're communicating with the right person at all times. Tapping on the green icon displays a tooltip informing users that messages being exchanged are encrypted and the contact is verified.
The icon will turn red if there's a problem with the authentication key of a trusted user. That could indicate that the user has changed the primary phone or that a man-in-the-middle attack has been launched.
Tapping on the red icon will display a tooltip noting that Viber cannot verify the other party's number. To resolve the issue, the user needs to be reauthenticated as trusted.

Hidden Chats

Users can hide a conversation by tapping on the information screen for that chat. They then will be asked for a four-digit PIN. Users of iOS devices will be given the option of providing a fingerprint instead.
Users will be notified of a message in a hidden conversation, but what the message is or whom it's from won't appear on the device screen.
The feature is unidirectional -- if one user hides the conversation, no changes will be made on the other party's end.
"People are becoming increasingly wary about having their conversations monitored," noted Craig Kensek, security expert at Lastline, and "Viber seems to be trying to take advantage of a market opportunity."
A four-digit PIN "seems to be pretty weak, particularly if they mean four digits and not four characters," he told TechNewsWorld.

Following WhatsApp's Lead

Viber is following the lead of WhatsApp, which earlier this month announced it was introducing end-to-end encryption for all communications over its app.
"Viber was one of the apps having no special functions for private encrypted chats," remarked Andrew Komarov, chief intelligence officer at InfoArmor.
"WhatsApp has turned on encryption for all their clients, and that's why other famous mobile apps are paying attention to encryption," he told TechNewsWorld. "Also, they want to remain competitive, as privacy is a serious concern to many users."

The Battle for Privacy

A 2014 U.S. Supreme Court ruling held that police can't search a suspect's cellphone during an arrest without a warrant.
However, the National Security Agency reportedly has been sharing data from its surveillance activities with the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the IRS, in effect enabling warrantless searches.
Despite the weaknesses in its approach, Viber's move "will offer purchasers another layer of privacy," Kensek said.
Other companies likely will follow suit, he added. "The percentage of people drinking the 'I must encrypt for all my communications' Kool-Aid is tough to forecast but easy to market off of." Source:technewsworld

Chris Brown was 'suicidal' after assaulting Rihanna

Chris Brown was 'suicidal' after assaulting Rihanna
<strong>September 2014: </strong>On September 2, <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/02/showbiz/chris-brown-plea/index.html?iref=allsearch" target="_blank">Brown pleaded guilty to simple assault</a> for a case stemming from the Washington sidewalk skirmish in October 2013. He was sentenced to time served -- he had already spent a day in jail post-arrest -- and he had to pay a $150 fine. Two weeks later, Brown released his sixth studio album, "X," to mostly positive reviews.
It's been years since he assaulted Rihanna, but Chris Brown is speaking out on it.
The singer tweeted the trailer to the forthcoming documentary "Welcome to my Life: The Official Chris Brown Documentary" late Sunday. In it, he speaks about assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 and the aftermath.
The award-winning R&B singer pleaded guilty in 2009 to assaulting Rihanna on the night of the Grammys. The resulting fallout left Brown devastated, he says in the trailer.
"I was thinking about suicide and everything else," he said. "I wasn't sleeping, I barely ate. I just was getting high."
Brown has continued to make music and headlines, including additional run-ins with the police and other countries threatening to bar him because of his domestic violence conviction.
A release date for the documentary has not yet been announced. source (CNN)

    FB Messenger Launches Bot Platform

    FB Messenger Launches Bot Platform

As expected, Facebook announced new tools for developers to build bots inside FB which will add several new functions to the Messenger app. This can make Messenger a primary channel for businesses to interact with their customers and replace 1-800 numbers. The tools will include an API which can be used to build chat bots for Messenger and chat widgets for the web. All of this was revealed at Facebook’s F8 developer conference. The bot platform is open to the media which can allow publishers to message their users directly with news and other information. Mark Zuckerberg showed bots from CNN and 1-800-FLOWERS as a demo. The CNN bot sent out new stories which became personalized over time. The Flowers bot interacted with a person ordering flowers using conventional language.

Google Drive Supports Yahoo & WhatsApp

Google Drive Supports Yahoo & WhatsApp

On Wednesday, Google Drive started integrating with Yahoo Mail and WhatsApp. Drive already has integrated with several third-party apps before. Yahoo Mail has gained an interface which allows you to search for the Drive-hosted file you require and also grant editing or viewing privileges to its recipients. WhatsApp has a new button🖲 in conversations which let you attach Drive docs to messages. The process is much easier than before when users would have to paste a hyperlink or download the document and manually attach it to a message. The integration will be seen in a week or 2.

News: 500,000 Apply for 10,000 Police Jobs in 12 days

News: 500,000 Apply for 10,000 Police Jobs in 12 days

Nigerian Police - For those groping for proof that Nigerians seriously crave jobs, need not search any further but ask the operators of the police recruitment portal, who have in 12 days received more 500,000 applications for consideration in advertised 10,000 positions.

Spokesman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Ikechukwu Ani, informed The Guardian yesterday evening that “as at this morning (yesterday 11th April,) 9:20 am (local time), more than 487,000 applications were received successfully, so we are saying that at the close of the day, more than 500,000 must have applied. I can confirm that from the technical people.”

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had last year at the opening of the National Security Summit, directed that 10,000 graduates should be recruited in the police force as part of his government’s drive to tackle youth unemployment as well as to bridge the manpower shortfall in the force. But the directive was not carried out because the financial commitment was not captured in the year’s appropriation.

Following the declaration by the PSC chairman, Mike Okiro that the website for the recruitment of 10,000 additional policemen as directed by the President be opened for access by qualified applicants, it was greeted with jubilation.

The PSC had directed interested candidates to apply through its website, www.psc.gov.ng or that of the Nigeria Police Force, http://www.npf.gov.ng.

Investigation by The Guardian last week however, showed that the website was not opening as expected. An applicant, Master James, said: “At every click it would simply show ‘account for this site suspended, site under maintenance.”

    GOOGLE TO BUILD OWN CITY

Alphabet Inc.’s Sidewalks Labs is proposing to acquire bids from counties and states to test their “digital district.” Yes, that’s right, as crazy as it sounds, they’re wanting to create their very own digital city. Essentially they want to create an area in the USA🇺🇸 where they can test new technologies like super fast Internet & autonomous cars. It’s reported that there are 💯 city planning experts👓, researchers, and technologists in the project. These include Stuart Miller, the CEO of home builder Lennar, Anthony Townsend, research director of Institute of the Future✨, Stanford professor Balaji Prabhakar, and Harvard economist Ed Glaeser. So far Sidewalk Labs and Alphabet Inc. have refused to comment on the project.
